The movie follows a black clad gunfighter named El Topo, beginning with him and his son on a quest for revenge. After exacting their revenge, the father abandons the boy to the church before going back into the desert with his new lover. The woman insists that he kill the top four killers in the desert before she can love him, as such that she can truly be with the strongest man. The four killers are each fascinating characters. There’s one whose assistants are a man with no legs sitting on the shoulders of a man with no arms. Another is burly, strong man who is so incredibly strong and so incredibly in control of that strength that it allows him to build incredibly delicate, fragile structures and objects out of toothpicks, these objects which Topo cannot touch without destroying. The final master is an old man who uses a butterfly net to deflect bullets.

After being betrayed by his lover, El Topo goes into a coma for several years, sleeping in the heart of a mountain, a cocoon of sorts, as he will eventually be reborn as a savior. He dons a priestly robe and shaves his head and attempts to redeem himself, but must first find the same forgiveness in his heart that he seeks from the world.

Topo eventually reunites with his adult son, and learns that putting him in the church’s hands did not, in fact, spare him a life of difficulties, and that challenges and violence will hound you no matter who you are or what your background.

The movie touches on so many pieces of symbolism from so many religions that the end result is a bizarre, sort of Andy Warhol-esque mish mash of religions that becomes its own, unique entity. Nobody but the director can pick up on every piece of symbolism in the film, so it’s best to simply enjoy it for what it is.

El Topo is perhaps one of the most surreal and strange films of any genre. It will, all at once, shock you and uplift you, repulse and enlighten you, and it will leave you feeling positive, confused, and curious. It’s a rare film that asks more questions of the universe than it is capable of answering. Jodorowsky has always been one of the strangest directors of all time, and this may just be his crowning masterpiece.
