Preventing Malware From Entering Your Computer

August 23rd, 2010 Jerry Bowman No comments

The term malware has been thrown around the internet loosely and most people actually aren’t aware of exactly what it means since they tend to just categorize it with viruses. Malware is any type of software that enters your computer without you knowing and performs bad actions. This is why the “mal” in malware stands for malicious. Spyware, a term that has become associated with malware, is software that is used to collect data on a user such as usernames, passwords and credit card information.

A lot of computers tend to have malware running on them without the users even knowing about it, and to make matters worse, they are one of the biggest reasons as to why your computer is running slowly. This is why it is critical that you have some form of software that will not only protect your computer when malware tries to enter into your computer, but it also has to be able to detect that there is malware on your computer and remove it. I personally use two different pieces of software, one to stop malware from getting into the computer and another to scan and remove malware once it has found its way onto my computer.

The very first program that I tend to use is called Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. This program I use to scan my entire computer of any malware infections on the computer and it will then remove the infected files for you. All you have to do is to just download the program, click on the “perform a full scan” and it will look through all of the files on your hard drive to see if they are malware or malware related. After you have done that, if you want to do another scan in the future, a simply quick scan should do the trick.

The next program that I rely on is called Spyware Blaster (if you are interested just do a Google search for it). This is the program that is used to protect your computer by trying to stop programs from finding their way into your computer. Now, all you have to do is to just install the program on your computer and it will give you full protection. All you have to do once it is installed is to make sure to click on the “Protection Status” button and then select Enable All Protection. There is one big downside to using the free version of this software – you have to manually go in and update it. To update the software, just click on the “Updates” button and then select “Check for Updates”.

I once ran a scan on a users computer and found 270 infected objects. The user had no clue that there was malware running on his computer and was shocked that I was able to show him this report. This is why is it critical that you should run scans on your computer regularly.

Viruses And The Relation To Your Computer’s Decrease In Performance

July 18th, 2010 Terrance May No comments

The internet has become such a common tool that most people use on a regular basis but one thing that is always overlooked about the internet is the safety of your computer. There are many different harmful things out there on the internet that can harm your computer like malware or spyware but the purposes of this article we are going to talk about viruses and why they slow down your computer. A virus is just a piece of software that has been written to harm a computer.

These pieces of software usually find their way onto your computer by just pretending to be another piece of software so that you will download it and install it. Once they are on your computer they will do their evil tasks and they will also run in the background. Both of these are one of the biggest causes of a slow computer. When these programs are running in the background of your computer they are using up your computers resources (like CPU usage and memory) and this leaves less computing power for you to use.

So, what’s the best way to stop a virus? Well the obvious answer to this would be to simply not go on the internet – but as we all that just isn’t possible. The alternative is to use an anti-virus program but this also opens another can of worms – which anti-virus programs out there will actually protect your computer without wasting money and not slowing down your computer? Luckily for you, I have used many different anti-virus programs over the course of a few years and I have my top two to recommend to you so you don’t have to waste your time or money (like I did) to figure them out.

The main program that I use for my anti-virus is called AVG Anti-Virus. Now to start off I’m going to warn you that there is a free version and a paid version of the software. If you are short on cash don’t worry to much – the free verion work just fine and it was the main one that I used for a long time. That being said, obviously the paid version of this software just has a few more fany features on, but you dont really have to have them. If you do decided to use AVG, you are going to need to tune it to make your computer faster (it will natrually make your computer slower). There are many ways to configure AVG to do this, but for the purpose of this article we are going to focus on the biggest one: preventing AVG from performing a scan as soon as you turn on your computer. What this means is that you are going to have to manually tell it to perform scan when it is convenient for you. To do this just click on “Computer Scanner”, select “Manage Scheduled Scans”, select “Edit Scan Schedule” and uncheck the box that says “Enable this task”. T34sh just click on save.

The other anti-virus program that I recommend is called ESET Nod 32 Anti-Virus. Now there is only a paid version of this but that being said you do get a lot of protection, it is not annoying to use and you do not have to configure it at all. This is probably the best anti-virus that I have ever tired and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Spyware And What You Should Know About It

July 13th, 2010 Bob Logan No comments

Why should you be worried about spyware? That’s actually a really good question. See, spyware is a form of malware that is used to log information on someone without them knowing. Some of the most common things that are logged are things like usernames, passwords, credit card information and even bank account information. Malware is software that is also installed on a users computer without them knowing but is designed to damage your computer (this is why the mal in malware stands for malicious). Since spyware is a piece of software that runs in the background of your computer, it will take up your computers resources and this leads to it slowing down your computer.

Since spyware is a piece of software that runs in the background of your computer without you even knowing about it, it eats up your computers resources and this will slow down your computer in time. I personally use two different pieces of software to prevent spyware from harming my computer. One is used to prevent spyware from ever getting into my computer, kind of like a guard and the other is used to scan and remove all spyware that managed to get passed the guard.

The first program that I use the most is called MalwareBytes Anti Malware. As a plus, it is free of charge to download. Once it is installed on your computer, just perform a full scan to completely scan your hard drive to remove any possible infections. I recommend that you do this since it will go through each and every single file on your computer to make sure that it is not infected. Once a full scan is done and you plan on doing another scan in the future, just using a quick scan should be good enough. There is one main downside to using the free version of this software – you do have to manually update it by clicking on the update button.

The second piece of software that I use is called Spyware Blaster. This is the program that I use to protect my computer by preventing malware and spyware from getting in. Notice the difference here: one program is used to scan and eliminate malware/spyware and the other tries to prevent it from ever coming in. Just download and install the program and it will provide you with full protection. With this program you are also going to have to manually update it, but hey its a lot better than paying for it.

What most people don’t know that is that if your computer is infected with spyware it can drastically slow down your computer. This is why it is critical that you take care of your computers health as much as possible.
