What You Must Know About Druid Leveling
If you are into druid leveling then these tips are absolutely vital. Druids are among the most adaptable characters in the WoW universe, capable of filling in any team situation. To those who are unfamiliar with the class’s complex play style, Druids seem to be a jack of all trades, which is untrue. A Druid needs to spend a very lengthy amount of time gearing up and practicing to master any one of the three druid styles. Balance and restoration druids are a partial exception, being able to share some equipment. A balance druid healing as resto spec in his balance specialized gear will be significantly weaker than a dedicated resto druid, and vice versa. Feral gear works the same way when switching from tanking to damage dealing. Most players consider Resto to be the Druid’s best specialization, though in the hands of an expert gamer all trees are viable options. Balance brings best in game AoE (Area of Effect damage) spells, while feral brings tanking and reasonable melee damage dealing.
There are three important points to remember in balance Druid tactics. The most important point is learning to use your CC (crowd control) spells effectively. Your primary CC spell as a druid is Entangling Roots. Great for anti melee applications, it also can be of some use in slowing down ranged based characters. Cyclone, while a powerful spell that takes an enemy entirely out of the action for a few seconds, can be difficult to master due to an inconsistent spell range when compared to other balance moves. You should practice using it in safe situations before you attempt to use it in battle, so you can get a good feel for its unusual maximum range. Another important point of interest is knowing how to effectively evade using travel form. Chances are you will be under attack, so use Bark Skin to reduce incoming damage, then Rejuvenation to increase your odds of survival, and then book it! You really want to focus on getting out of harm’s way as opposed to relying on your healing spells to win the day. Knowing when and how to use stealth is also very helpful. If you are a night elf you can use Shadowmeld to hide in moonkin form, an ideal set up for defending a battleground objective that lets you get in the first few attacks. You can also use cat form for defensive of offensive stealth, but be wary as it leaves you very vulnerable if detected. Also key to balance Druid tactics is learning when you can and can’t spell cast freely. Typically you should stop freely casting heals or damage when the enemy takes an interest in you; instead you should evade them until they lose interest.
At the heart of feral Druid tactics is knowing when to use bear form and when to stick to cat. Bear form shines in terms of damage reduction, making it a go-to PvE tanking spec, but in PvP it lacks the damage to be a good all-the-time choice. Instead you should only shift into bear form when you are being pressured by enemies and think you stand a chance without evading using travel form. In many cases it is possible to buy the time you need for reinforcements to arrive in battlegrounds. A secondary reason to shift to bear form is to access the form’s two signature PvP moves, Bash (a short stun) and feral charge bear, which has a spell interrupting feature and works much like a Warrior’s Intercept ability. Sticking to cat form when you are free to deal damage unopposed will net you the best results, so focus on building good combos and Ripping when the target has high health, using Ferocious Bite only to kill enemies near death. Keep Rake up, it’s powerful enough to not overlook. Savage Roar is more of a PvE cat form move, but if you can manage to work it into a PvP situation you can do some great burst damage.
Restoration is the most popular Druid talent line for good reason. It’s a fairly simple matter to stack up healing over time spells on everyone around you. Escaping most enemies is fairly easy, just HoT yourself up, cast Nature’s Grasp and make a break for it. It takes a small army to take down even a moderately skillful resto Druid. There are two ways you can deal with attackers. In the case of smaller assaults, you can simply heal though the damage and stand your ground, becoming in essence a PvP tank; make sure you load up on Resilience before trying this, because otherwise you can just HoT yourself up and use travel form and Nature’s Grasp to evade. If the enemy isn’t paying attention to you (though they should be), then you are free to drop to your humanoid form and start throwing around CC or damage spells; just remember that shifting frequently is a huge mana drain. Practice dueling to learn which classes to watch for spell interrupts. Being able to see a few seconds ahead in PvP will win you matches.
There are three important pillars of Druid PvP play: proper use of stealth, getting the most out of Bark Skin, and last but most important, mastering the use of travel form. To get the most out of your stealth you need to understand an enemy’s sphere of detection. Improving your stealth rating with enchants and talents gets around this sphere. Remember that Rogues always have an edge on you in stealth with their faster movement. Using Shadowmeld if you are a night elf to force enemies to stop targeting you wastes their time near the end of a spell casting cycle. Do it often to throw a wrench into their gears. The best way to learn is by dueling a Hunter friend, getting as close as possible without stepping in the radius of flares or traps. Bark Skin is also surprisingly complex. It’s fine to use it right away with certain enemies, but in situations where you are dealing with damage over time spell casters, wait until they have stacked all their DoTS on you before you activate the spell. It’s counterintuitive but it actually adds up to more damage reduction overall.
Mastering travel form takes a lot of practice. In the current versions of WoW, now more than ever it is possible for enemies to counter you with various slows, so you need to pace yourself and not overspend mana shape-shifting. An important note about the travel form escape tactic is that it doesn’t work indoors; however, you can use cat form and Dash for a similar indoor effect, although it will cost more mana. The best way to learn the ropes of travel form evasion is to simply duel friends of all classes and practice the art of keep away. Feral Druids can rely on the speed bonus to travel form from PvP gear, and resto can rely on their heal over time spells to make it more survivable, but for balance Druids it becomes most important to quickly learn to make use of line of sight. Cast Nature’s Grasp before you enter travel form, as casting it while you are already in that form will force you back into humanoid mode.
