The movie follows Edward Norton as the unnamed Narrator. We never find out his name. He works a dull, soul crushing white collar job. The movie came out about the same time as Office Space, and the two are compared quite often. They both follow some of the same trains of thought in terms of where they get their material, but Fight Club takes it in a much darker direction, while still actually remaining just as funny as the other film, in spite of not technically being a comedy film.

The movie really picks up when the Narrator meets Tyler Durden, a man who has no regard for the rules of normal society. He’s sort of like Cosmo Kramer with a copy of The Stranger and a sense of testosterone driven anger. He’s scary, funny, and sort of inspiring. Definitely a man with ideas. Not all of them good, but at least he’s got ideas.

Tyler Durden is really the heart of the film in.. Many more ways than one. He and the narrator together found the Fight Club, which begins as simply a place where lonely white collar men can fight so as to reaffirm their manhood, but soon grows into something deeper, more frightening, and which has a much greater impact in the grand scheme of things.

From there, it grows into a cultural movement, and a dangerous one, at that. It’s fascinating seeing just how far it goes. It shows that there’s a lot of rage and anger out there. It doesn’t seem that far fetched that so many people would catch on to the ideas Durden puts forth, and while parts of the movie are outlandish, this part is not.

The way it ties everything up is fascinating and was, at the time, an incredible and unpredictable plot twist. Since, it’s become sort of cliche. This movie and the Sixth Sense both created their own style of “surprise endings”, and created trends that would eventually get a little tired but which, at the time, were exciting and interesting.

Norton quickly skyrocketed in fame with this movie, proving that he could take some really exciting projects and make the most of them. Since, his career has had a lot of ups and downs, with a cool, edgy flick one year, and some weak box office bait the next. This is one of his best, though, and the same goes for Brad Pitt.

The movie is incredibly violent, it’s very surreal. Outside of the violence, some of the details involving the making of soap are disgusting. The movie uses these shock tactics to really get under your skin and make a statement about humanity and the nature of shock, and in the end, it has more questions than it does answers, like any honest film.

The story follows Hauer as a Vietnam War veteran who was abandoned overseas by his old war buddy. He wound up being taken in by a South Vietnamese village, where he was taught how to defend himself with a samurai sword, in that he could no longer reasonably operate a firearm. He returns to the United States with sword in hand to find the person who left him behind in Vietnam. Interestingly, he’s not out for revenge, he’s out to forgive his old friend and make things right between the two of them.

Along the way he picks up the man’s son in Miami, Florida, and escorts him to meet his father in Las Vegas, Nevada, who has gotten into some trouble with the local gangsters and hoods. Their quest winds up being surprisingly heart warming and moving, which is nice, considering that it really didn’t need to deliver any more than some action and laughs.

Rutger Hauer is really something in this movie, playing all the action and laughs just right, and, the whole way, convincingly playing a blind man. Besides Hauer, the rest of the cast is pretty great, too. Look out for Randall Tex Cobb as “Slag”, the badguy’s right hand man, who meets a fitting end when he finally gets his come uppance at the end.

The movie really captures the best of what eighties action comedy films were all about. It’s funny, the action is inventive, imaginative, and exciting, and it finds a lot of room for great character development and good storytelling, so while there’s focus on humor and action, that’s not all there is to it. The story is actually somewhat touching.

Ninja legend Sho Kosugi shows up towards the end for really no reason whatsoever, except to get Sho Kosugi in there. He plays a hired sword who arrives in the US from Japan in order to fight Rutger Hauer just so we can get a great fight scene in there between Hauer and a true legend of Ninja themed action movies.

Two of the best badguys in the movie are the pair of redneck brothers who serve as the movie’s comic relief.

It’s too bad that they just don’t make movies like this anymore. The eighties were a great time for funny, exciting action flicks, and they just don’t make them like this anymore. The film follows Shabadoo and Boogaloo Shrimp, real life breakdancers basically playing themselves in the film, albeit under different names. They teach dancing at the local community center where the neighborhood kids go to stay out of trouble and keep their lives on the right track.

The community center owes a ton of money in property taxes, and so, they’re going to be foreclosed upon by The Bad Guys, investors who hope to turn it into a shopping mall. This is the sort of story that really drove every classic eighties flick including The Goonies and The Blues Brothers: Save the community center/church/neighborhood from mean old land developers by putting on a show/finding buried treasure.

It’s really just a good enough plotline upon which to drape a whole bunch of awesome dance numbers. The first film featured some great break dancing scenes, but this film, with its bigger budget and better sense of fun, blows the original film right out of the water on that front. Not twenty minutes in, the two leads have begun dancing down the street and gotten everyone in the neighborhood to dance right behind them. Cops, mailmen, old ladies, everyone is dancing. It’s surreal and goofy, where the first film tried for a more realistic approach.

One of the best numbers has Boogaloo Shrimp dancing on the walls and ceiling of his room. It’s easy to figure out how they did the scene: They put the room on a spinning axis. But the way they pulled it off is spectacular. It’s all shot in just a handful of long, unbroken takes, where it would have been much easier with quick cutting and shorter takes. Halfway through, his girlfriend walks in the room, while he’s on the ceiling, and leans against a wall watching. It’s obvious that she’s wearing a harness, but regardless, they went all out to make the scene work and feel real.

Shabadoo has the movie’s second best scene, when he and his friends have to confront a local street gang after push comes to shove. He chases them out under a bridge where he finally corners them and angrily rips off his vest, marches up to their leader and… Starts popping and locking. Yep, he settles a territory dispute with a dance off. It’s fun, it’s funny, and it’s got all the action of a fight scene without any of the unnecessary violence.

Now of course, the movie ends happily. That’s not a spoiler. How else could such an upbeat, positive movie end but with an upbeat, positive ending?

If you’re feeling nostalgic or just want to have a heck of a good time, invite some friends over, grab a few beers, and enjoy one of the all time cheesy eighties classics. All of the jurors are white males the majority being middle aged. Their lives are far removed from that of the defendant. After spending six days on the trial they must know come to a decision that decision whether the defendant lives or dies. They refer to one another according to their jury numbers. These nameless men become symbols of the varying views and biases within our society.

As the jurors deliberate, tensions rise. Most of them think it is an easy case to decide. Without putting much thought into their decisions, they are willing to go with the circumstantial evidence presented at trial, and send a young man to his ultimate execution. The majority wants to rush into a decision because they believe the facts of the case to be obvious of the teenagers guilt. They ultimately rush to judgement without considering who the defendant is and what is the truth of the matter.

The jurors bring their own personal experiences and biases to the table which make coming to a unanimous decision very difficult. To most, the evidence appears to be overwhelming. But a closer inspection of the evidence gets way to reasonable doubt.

According to witness testimony, they heard the father and son arguing. During that argument, someone heard the son threatened to kill his father. The pocket knife that killed the father was similar to the one they found in the teenagers possession. The facts seem to all line up and the majority of the jurors are ready to make a unanimous guilty verdict.

When you look deeper into the plot, we come to realize this story is a commentary on the American judicial system. Through these jurors, we learn to examine how racial and cultural differences separate us on such a critical level that it can affect a life or death situation. The jurors must decide whether this Puerto Rican teenager from the slums lives or dies. But there particular biases may in fact lead to a miscarriage of justice.

The first vote among the jurors does not have a favorable result for the defendant. Eleven vote guilty. But juror number 8 stands his ground that the evidence is not strong enough to lead to a guilty verdict. And slowly he convinces the others to change their vote.

Juror number 8 is also included in the mindset of 12 Angry Men. He also has issues he must address in order to make a fair and just decision. Juror 8 helps the others to see past their misguided views and see that this is a young man deserving of a fair verdict. Originally the first vote was eleven for guilty and juror number eight being the only dissenting vote. Through his careful analysis and sound arguments with the other jurors, he is able to convince them to change their vote. His persistence for justice saved a life.

The first thing that you should likely understand is that this film was by no means the first or even close to the first movie to feature extraterrestrial beings. These are very aggressive and very deadly creatures, that have absolutely no interest in making patterns in corn fields or beaming you up into their spaceship.

They were creatures that instilled fear and terror into the audiences that got to see them. They walked on all fours like the most deadly predators on Earth do, and they learned rather easily that humans were a rather simple kill. They had a couple of rows of razor sharp teeth and heavily salivated a substance that was able to eat through the floor of the space ship that the crew that came to the planet called home.

It is this crew that the story centers around. They are on a mining expedition to take minerals back to Earth when they are hailed from a nearby planet with a distress signal. But it doesn’t take the crew members Dallas and Kane long to learn that they are not in the midst of anything friendly when they stumble upon a nest of eggs. One hatches and a little alien leaps out and attaches to Kane’s face and refuses to release the hold.

But the little creature is not the one they really need to worry about. You see, they were unknowingly destined to show up on the planet from the company that they work for to get a specimen of these creatures to take back to Earth with them. In trying to escape many of them die, except for Ripley who manages to escape on a shuttle, with a creature still trying to get to her. She ignites the engines, incinerating the alien and allowing for her safe escape.

Powerful performances make this movie a classic. Perhaps the most important of these roles was that of Ripley which was portrayed by Sigourney Weaver. But hers was not the only impressive performance that made this movie so incredible, you might also look for great acting from Tom Skerritt (Dallas) and John Hurt (Kane).
