5 TV series that will keep you watching.

February 27th, 2010 Jennifer White No comments

The notion of a television show that practically demands you keep watching it is here to stay. TV series are made to suck you in, and not just for advertiser dollars — buying the dvd boxsets means you can smash through those shows in a marathon of viewing. Check out these 5 crazily addictive ones.

#5 Gossip Girl.

Sure, it’s just like every other one of those TV series full of rich jerks messing around on each other. But there’s something about the particular nature of these Gossip Girl shows that just keeps you drawn in — whether it’s the NYC setting or the contemporary mores and ‘expose’ feel of its pulpy plots, you won’t be able to turn it off.

#4 True Blood.

There’s just something about a bunch of crazy vampires and the metaphor of the gay community and the loads of crazy sex and over-the-top violence that makes people nuts for this show. If Bill the southern gentleman vampire doesn’t turn your crank, you’ve got Anna Paquin’s Sookie Stackhouse to make you crazy, too. Addictive as anything!

#3 Jersey Shore

There have been few reality shows (especially in the latter part of the decade) that have captured the public imagination like this trashy MTV series does. When you watch it all on a dvd boxset, the sheer shininess of it all might be a little bit too much, but it also lets you see the hilarious behavior patterns that made the show so memorable.

#2 The Office

Talk about addictive — not only is this show hilarious in its send-up of corporate culture and office inefficiencies, it also amazingly inserted a wonderful romance that has its many, many fans clamoring for more. If you go through the show on DVD, you’ll really see how wonderfully it’s been done.

#1 Lost.

Undoubtedly done to be one of the most addictive series ever made, Lost keeps a global viewing population riveted to their screens with the oldest trick in the book — cliffhangers and the ’serial’ model that reveals, bit-by-bit, a little piece of the whole. There’s really nothing like it.

Change Your Entire Life Just By Watching 5 Movies.

December 19th, 2009 Jen Taylor No comments

Ever seen a movie that changed your life? Not just in a superficial way, like “wow, I just saw a movie that I like more than all others!” No, I mean one that really changes the way you see the world.

It’s hard to find a better list of films that are so unbelievably watchable, and yet say more about all those topics listed above. These movies will literally change your life.

#5: A Template for Spectacle — Triumph of the Will.

Leni Riefenstahl’s chilling tribute to Hitler and the Nazi party will change the way you think about art that glorifies war and violence. When you realize that great film spectacle can be put into the service of something so terrible as Nazism, it changes the way you look at all heavily aestheticized works.

#4: De Sica’s Genius on Display in Bicycle Thieves.

If you want a little bit of proof that a simplistic story with the vaguest of outlines — man gets bike and job, bike is stolen, man loses job and steals another bike — can say universal things about humanity and sadness, then this is your film.

#3: Polanski Figures Out Corruption in Chinatown.

Polanski, despite the mess he created for himself before leaving America, made what is undoubtedly one of the best American films of all time. This might just be one of those movies that says more about Hollywood than any other, which is important if you ever think about what the movies ‘mean’ to us.

#2: Hitchcock Never Got Better Than Vertigo.

There is no other film that tricks the viewer into thinking they are watching just a normal (albeit extremely brilliant) thriller, while simultaneously deconstructing everything about what an actual film director does on set. If you ever need to see a film that can have so much going on all at once without seeming overcrowded, this is it.

#1: The Godfather.

It doesn’t matter that this film is about the mafia — it’s actually about family, power, children, America, crime, and politics. It’s also told so unbelievably well that sometimes you literally cannot believe it doesn’t have a bad moment. Which it doesn’t. The ultimate example of film’s completely unique cultural position.
